If one million people vermicomposted for a year, 82,000 tons of food waste could be turned into fertilizer. Do not underestimate the lowly worm; it is one of nature’s best recyclers. Give hungry worms access to your kitchen vegetable waste, and soon through the process of vermicomposting, your garbage will be transformed into nutrient-rich, nonpolluting fertilizer. Compost improves plant and root growth, helps soil hold moisture, binds nutrients in the soil and can help inhibit plant disease. Interested in learning more? Join Lisa Ryder Moore for a free one hour Compost Workshop this Saturday, May 3rd, at 10am at Polliwog Park. MB residents may purchase discounted Biostack Bins or Worm Composting Bins at the class or call Waste Management at (310) 830-7100. Plastic bottles from water and soda pile up in our landfills and take 450+ years to break down. Connie Harrington
