Renee Sokol

Personal Background

I was born in Camp LeJuene, North Carolina, the proud daughter of a 30-year U.S. Marine Colonel. (It might surprise you that Mom was the disciplinarian.) Needless to say, we moved around a lot! My fondest memories come from the five years we spent in Honolulu – going to school barefooted and learning the art of hula dancing. I have two brothers and two sisters. (I’m the “baby” of the family.) My husband Ron and I have been married for 22 years; yes, I got married when I was very young! We are the proud parents of two sons, Austin and Geoffrey, both of whom attend Mira Costa High School and are Meadows alumni. The newest member of our family is a Golden Retriever named Jesse. Only now do I understand fully why this breed is the family dog of choice. My husband may never get the daughter he’s always wanted, but at least he’s got the dog he’s wanted since boyhood! Our family is complete.

Professional Background

Teaching is my second career and one I undertook after motherhood. I received my teaching credential from California State University at Dominguez Hills and began teaching when my younger son entered school. I love that my schedule coordinates with my kids’ and, let’s be honest -- having the summer off is the best!

This will be my tenth year in the classroom, and my seventh year teaching second grade. I’ve taught third, fourth, and fifth grades as well. This has given me a nice perspective to see what’s ahead for my students so I am truly able to prepare them for their academic journey. Teaching a child to read never gets old, and I have a particular love for teaching a child how to write. I am absolutely passionate about my job as an educator.

Contact Information

I sincerely believe that open and frequent communication between the home and school contributes more than any other single factor to a student’s success. I do my best to keep parents informed as to the happenings at school via weekly newsletters. However, since you are the most important people in your child’s life, we will need to work together for your child’s benefit. Please feel free to contact me anytime that you have a question, concern, or information about your child that you wish to share with me. I can be reached via voice mail at 546-8033, ext. 5619, or via email at rsokol@manhattan.k12.ca.us.
